Founded in 2007, Pheasant’s Tears produces artisanal natural wines with ancient Georgian techniques, growing rare endemic grape varieties and harvesting with organic processes. Their name comes from a Georgian tale in which the hero claims that only a wine beyond measure could make a pheasant cry tears of joy, and with family winemakers that have been making wine for 8 generations as well as Georgia’s rich soil, Pheasant’s Tears strives to meet this standard. Georgia is seen by many as the birthplace of wine, with winemaking being undertaken in the region since 6,000 BC. As a result there are over 500 indigenous grape varieties inthe region, Pheasant’s Tears are committed to seeking out and revitalisong these rare indigenous varietals and bringing them to market.
The Quinta Red Blend is a field blend of 5 indigenous grapes (tavkveri, shavkapito, danakharuli, goruli mtsvane and chinuri), it undergoes 5 days skin contact before aging in Georgian Qvevri (clay pots), which are buried in the ground to natually regulate the temperature. This wine has lovely supple tannins which bring together ripe red currants, damson berries and violets. Like the best Georgian wines, it possesses earthiness and real fruit flavours balanced by energetic acidity and those fine-grained tannins.
