Founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux in 2007, Mullineux is now one of the most lauded wineries in South Africa. Named ‘Winery of the Year’ four times by the Platter Guide in 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020, Mullineux were also Tim Atkin MW’s ‘South African Winemakers of the Year’ in 2016. Their aim is to bottle wines that are “a true expression of the Swartland”. As such, they follow a natural, minimalist approach in both the vineyard and cellar. They work closely with a select group of growers who follow sustainable, reasoned farming practices, as well as owning vineyards at their Roundstone Farm in Riebeeksrivier. Their spectacular Single Terroir wines are a limited production made even scarcer due to the recent drought years in the Cape.
As always with great wines, the story starts in the vineyard. For Mullineux’s Single Terroir wines, the secret is in the soil. Working with three main soil types, granite, schist and iron-based soils, Andrea and Chris believe that soil is the most influential factor in the Swartland ahead of slope, aspect and altitude. All the grapes are harvested at the same ripeness and are vinified identically, meaning the wines are truly expressive of the soils on which they are grown.
