Bedrock Wine Co. was started in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Peterson. Working out of a small converted chicken coop in a friend’s backyard, Morgan focused on making personality-filled wines wrought from a small array of thoughtfully farmed vineyards. Over time the chicken coop, with its outdoor fermenters and tiny basket press, gave way to production at another friend’s winery before the “elegant tin-sided warehouse" eventually became Bedrock's oenological home. After six years of working alone, the winery welcomed the addition of Chris Cottrell as a partner along with a small, dedicated staff. The winery is first and foremost a mission-driven operation dedicated to preserving and rehabilitating old vineyards around California. These vineyards, planted by California’s viticultural pioneers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are living pieces of history. Not only are the duo able to draw inspiration from those very pioneers, but they get to use the materials planted long before their arrival, which have survived two world wars, Prohibition and a constantly evolving marketplace.
The 2018 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard X-Block boasts stunning aromatic intensity and superb balance. Rose petal, sage, lavender, white pepper, mint and savory herbs scream with Syrah character. The 2018 was fermented in several lots, and whole cluster inclusion ranged from 40% to 100%. What comes through most is an exquisite expression of Syrah from one of the most pedigreed sites in Santa Barbara, and all of California for that matter. 94 Points, Vinous
