Description

This benchmark Rheinhessen estate was founded in 1890 by the Banker Carl Gunderloch. It has been the passion of the family to focus on the Riesling variety which finds perfect conditions in their vineyards. The 250 million year old “Red slate” -Soil from permian times and the special microclimatic setting on the steep slopes next to the impressive River Rhein build the base for the creation of unique wines. Now the Hasselbach Family cultivates 24ha of vineyards which are planted with 85% Riesling. Working with the vineyards they feel obliged to preserve the plants and the sanity of the soil for the generations to come. Already with cautious pruning they are aiming for very low yields around 50 hl/ha. It is the family’s ambition to find the perfect balance of aromatics, a fruity acidity and the typical minerality of the slaty soils in the grapes.

This Kabinett is a classical, off-dry Riesling typical for the minerality of the red slate soil. The wine offers harmonious Riesling fruit with a fine acidity and juicy texture. Typical fruity characteristics of yellow flesh stone fruits and long mineral finish of our “Red Slate” vineyards. Named after the founder of the winery “Jean Baptiste” Gunderloch. The lower terraces of our three top vineyard sites Nierstein Hipping, Nierstein Pettenthal and Nackenheim Rothenberg. Red slate soil from Permian times (290 mil. years old)./p>
