Identical twins Jim and Bob Varner have a Burgundian approach to their business. Their initial success was based on trying to make the best possible Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from a limited number of unique sites. They succeeded with this with the range of Varner Estate wines but quantities were such that it didn’t pay the bills. They therefore launched their ‘négociant’ range, making affordable Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel using bought in fruit, under the Foxglove label. This was never a secondary project though and both Jim and Bob enthuse about the challenge of trying to make the Foxglove range at this price point. Their task is made that much easier by a rejection of expensive new oak, leaving the Foxglove wines to be judged on the fruit and mineral qualities of the wine. They must be doing something right as Antonio Galloni comments that 'The Foxglove range offer some of the most delicious value priced wines in California.'
