Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek Valley, the farm's name means "ravine of the Boekenhout" (pronounced Book-n-Hoot). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making.
Since 1998, the Syrah has always come from an undisclosed vineyard in Wellington, and in 2013 a selection of fruit from Porseleinberg in the Swartland was included, bringing a component with wonderful freshness, spiciness and structure that will take the longevity of the Boekenhoutskloof to even greater heights.
The wine shows incredible complexity, with masses of violets, blackcurrant fruit, white and black pepper and the suggestion of cured meats adding to the complexity. The purity and depth of fruit, firm velvety tannins and refreshing acidity shows the massive ageing potential of this vintage. Textured, composed and seamless in style, this is one of South Africa's best Syrah. 20-30% whole bunches are employed.
