Description

Tenuta San Guido is the result of a very long tradition combined with an ethical message, that has together been passed on from generation to generation. This was fuelled by a pioneering passion, aimed at doing good, and an abiding respect for nature.

Quietly, elegantly and almost involuntarily, the Incisa della Rocchetta family released the wine that would revolutionise the Italian wine scene, creating a totally new genre: the Super-Tuscan. Tenuta San Guido, now a legendary estate, was first planted in the 1940s by the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who noted the similarity between Bolgheri’s terroir and that of the Graves in Bordeaux. When Sassicaia was finally commercially released in 1968, it took the fine wine world by storm. In 1994 it was granted its own appellation – Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC – further cementing its iconic status.

Le Difese is the most approachable wine from the estate. Tenuta San Guido crafted it to be an attractively-priced wine for everyday enjoyment. Delicious and easy-going, it will be drink beautifully from release, whilst Sassicaia matures in the cellar.

The presence of Sangiovese, which determines its character, gives Le Difese a clear personality, it is a wine partly produced with French grapes that does not renounce its Tuscan backbone.

The 2022 Le Difese is plump, juicy and expressive, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Crushed flowers, succulent red cherry fruit, mint, spice and blood orange all race across the palate. This exuberant yet mid-weight coastal Tuscan red is a total pleasure bomb. The 2022 is an especially fine edition. It benefits from a warm year - which can be a positive for entry-level wines - earlier bottling and selection. Le Difese is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (both estate and non-estate sites) and Sangiovese, all purchased. 92 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
