Description

Known as the “Genius of Neive”, Bruno Giacosa’s mastery of Nebbiolo was widely recognised amongst wine lovers. His single-vineyards Barolo and Barbaresco set new standards for the whole regions, allowing a unique blend of traditional and cutting-edge methods. This is undoubtedly one of the great estates, not just of Piedmont, but in all of Italy. Giacosa are revered globally, with a reputation built on the elegance, purity and complexity of wines produced over the lifetime of Bruno Giacosa. Over the course of 60 years at the winery, Bruno came to be recognised as one of the greatest winemakers in Piedmont.

Since 2006, with Bruno’s illness and subsequent passing in 2008, the estate has been ably run by Bruno’s daughter, Bruna, with winemaking lineage assured by the presence of Bruno’s long-time oenologist, Dante Scaglione, through Francesco Versio and now Giuseppe Tartaglino. Bruno’s standards have unquestionably been upheld, with an immaculate and suitably understated renovation of the winery, and continued, unwavering commitment to producing wines of both the highest quality and of true vineyard expression. Since the 2012 vintage, all of their Barbaresco and Barolo have been made exclusively from estate-grown fruit.

Bruno Giacosa, along with Alfredo Currado of Vietti, pioneered the development of Arneis in the 1970s. In 2023, Roero was hit by hail in early July, reducing production by 60%. Bruna is very happy with the quality of the vintage, despite the extremely limited quantity. The juice was bright and fresh, and the fermentation delivered a pure and saline character to the wine.

The Arneis shows a ripe and profound character of aromas, expected for a warm and dry vintage. Nonetheless, the freshness of the fruit sustains the structure of a solar vintage, with notes of ripe orchard fruit and confit citrus.
