Description

Craggy Range is arguably the pre-eminent winery in Hawkes Bay, with fantastic vineyard holdings on the Gimblett Gravels. These are some of the youngest soils on the planet, formed in the last hundred or so years from changes in the direction of the local Ngaruroro river. This triangular area is deeply alluvial and one of the very best locations for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other Bordeaux grapes as well as Syrah in all of New Zealand. Te Kahu means 'the cloak' in te reo Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata.

Made from Merlot 49%, Cabernet Sauvignon 34%, Cabernet Franc 12%, Malbec 3%, Petit Verdot 2%. Deep crimson red. Complex aromatics of ripe plum, a touch of cassis, fresh rosemary and roasted meats. The palate is generous and approachable but also has a high level of sophistication with fine grained tannins enveloping a dense body of succulent black fruits. 18% new French Oak.
