Description

Jason Drew, along with his wife, Molly, started the Drew Family Winery at the turn of the century with a strong desire to craft small production coastal wines that expressed both their site and traditional varietal character. In 2004 they bought 10 hectares of land that were planted with apple trees at the time.

It was in the Mendocino Ridge, west of Anderson Valley and north of Sonoma Coast, and just 3 miles from the sea. The land was replanted with Pinot Noir and a new winery was built. 2014 saw their first ever wine produced from this vineyard. In between times they forged relationships with vineyard owners who they respected and who worked in a sustainable way that they admired and bought Pinot and Syrah grapes from vineyards that interested them, from both the Ridge and Anderson Valley.

In terms of winemaking, they retain a certain percentage of whole bunches as they add freshness and complexity and avoid heavy extraction. The wines are generally bottled un-fined and unfiltered and are amongst the very finest examples coming out of California. Pure, honest and at times, thrilling.

'This has a medium ruby colour, nose is intriguingly perfumed with red cherries, florals and subtle herbs, crushed rock minerality; the palate is medium bodied, with medium acidity and just the right amount of slightly structured tannins. Some whole bunch aroma and flavour is present and adds complexity and fragrance -  extremely delicious, a must try for any Burgundy lover! This will drink easily for another 5 years.'
