Description

Jorge Monzon's Dominio del Águila might be a fairly new project, but he has some high flying experience under his belt. Jorge studied in Bordeaux and Burgundy specialising in viticulture, his first position was at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, before moving to Spain where he worked a year at Vega Sicilia. Whilst technical director at Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro, he identified some old vineyards in the region, whose fruit was at that time sold to top producers ending up in some of their best cuvées. In 2010 Jorge and his wife Isabel Rodero founded Domino del Águila in the village of La Aguilera and started making wine from these exceptional old vineyards. Some are over 100 years old, they are mainly of Tempranillo, with some Blanca del País, Bobal, Garnacha, Albillo and Tempranillo Gris, all are farmed following organic and biodynamic methods.

Fruit comes from some of the oldest vines in the village of La Aguilera, many over 100 years old and some even pre-phylloxera. Elevage takes place in a cool cellar at a very slow rate, spending 35 months in old barrels before release. The resulting wine is incredibly refined, but still with true Ribera del Duero character.

'This is deep ruby red. The nose is perfumed with florals, baking spice and ripe black fruit. Oak managed extremely well, this is fine and layered. Palate is full-bodied with high, structured but roundly polished tannins. This is a small allocation of a wine to idelaly be put aside for 3 -5 years or alternatively decant for min 1-2 hours. This is absolutely outstanding - what joy to savour and taste!'
