Description

Coca i Fitó is an innovative and dynamic cellar of single vineyard wines led by Toni and Miquel Coca i Fitó. Toni is an experienced Catalan winemaker. He has dedicated the major part of his life in research and studies of viticulture, especially the relationship between soil types and vines, as well as varietals’ capacity to age alone or when blended. The Coca i Fitó project began in 2006 when the two brothers decided to make their first wine from the eponymous Coca i Fitó vineyard in Montsant, “Coca i Fitó Negre”.

From that first wine produced in 2006, their wine project has become increasingly diverse. The main winery is located in DO Montsant, in the village of El Masroig. This is where the majority of wines are made. Some of the white wines are made in the neighbouring DO Terra Alta, at the Celler Cooperatiu de Gandesa where Toni is Technical Director. Coca i Fitó are partners in projects found in other appellations, such as Priorat, Empordà and Ribeira Sacra.

The recipe for Coca i Fitó wines – For the wines to be truly unique in these various winemaking regions, a number of factors are involved. The most important is the quality of the grapes, and they depend on organic, low-yielding old vines for the majority of their production. Native grapes as well as well-adapted international varietals.

Samsara Priorat is a new wine produced by the winemaker Eva Escudé, Coca i Fitó and the Vives brothers at Terra Dominicata, in Escaladei, in the heart of Priorat. Made from up to 70-year-old vines from the regions of Gratallops and Vilella Alta.  The principal varietals are Grenache and Carignan which are aged for 12 months in French and American Oak barrels.

Balance of mineral harmony pegged to the Llicorella (the local slate) backbone, that opens to spice, ripe fruit, herbal notes and a consistent freshness. A fascinating complex wine with delicious ripe berry fruit complemented by white pepper, a herbal note and graphite mineral, on a rich lingering palate.
