Description

A great new addition to our Burgundy selection from the oustanding 2022 vintage

Domaine la Soufrandise is located in Fuissé, in the centre of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. The Melin family have managed the estate, in the heart of Fuissé, since the 1850s. When the lease ran out in 1986, Nicolas Melin and his wife Françoise decided to take over the domaine despite having no previous winemaking or viticulture experience. Nicolas learned on the job, while studying oenology at Dijon University on the side, becoming the sixth generation of the Melin family to run the domaine. His attitude towards biodiversity and meticulous attention to detail, which stem from his background in engineering and forestry, resulted in a switch to sustainable vineyard management. After their children decided to pursue different paths, Nicolas and Françoise sold the domaine in 2022 to a young, enterprising couple, Barthélemy Gruot and Justine Vichard. Barthélemy and Justin have managed Domaine La Soufrandise since the 2023 vintage and have started a transition to organic vineyard management.

The domaine’s seven hectares of vineyards are spread over 30 different plots in Fuissé, over half of which are more than 45 years old. The grapes are harvested late and to capture their innate ripe, exotic fruit flavours..

The Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes is sourced from 42 to 92-year-old vines and includes parcels of ‘Les Ménétrières’, ‘Les Perrières’ and ‘Vers Cras’, all of which were recently granted Premier Cru status. Each parcel is vinified separately, predominantly in stainless steel, with 30% vinified in French oak barrels (50% new). They are then individually aged on their lees for 10 months before the final blend is assembled. The resulting wine is opulent with generous layers of yellow peach, apricot fruit and hazelnut nuances, balanced by a poised mineral freshness.
