Description

To create great wine takes two ingredients: a special vineyard site, and the talent to express it. As the founding producer of modern-day Yarra Valley, Yarra Yering had the pick of the terroir – and one which perfectly ripens Cabernet and Shiraz, when all around are growing Burgundian varieties. That stunning site was then refracted through the scintillating mind of academic-turned winemaker Dr Bailey Carrodus, and while the wines might not have been technically the most consistent, his innovative techniques imbued them with a vivid, “analogue” magic arguably unmatched in Australia. The loss of Dr Carrodus posed the obvious question: who could continue such a unique legacy? The answer is the inordinately talented Sarah Crowe, who with her début 2014 vintage at Yarra Yering picked up the accolade ‘Winemaker of the Year’ from James Halliday. Subsequent vintages have proved that this was no fluke.

Word has been spreading, and over the last 5 years interest in the wines has increased exponentially. The recognition from critics mirrors that momentum; last month Halliday named Yarra Yering his ‘Winery of the Year’ for 2022. With those two essential ingredients still very much in place, therefore, we are delighted to present this latest release of some of Australia’s most captivating and sought-after wines.

All hand harvested and processed across a sorting table, only the very best berries go into this wine. The Cabernet fruit is crushed to build structure through fermentation. Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot are whole berry ferments for fragrance and palate flesh. All fermented in half-tonne fermenters and hand-plunged twice daily, some of the Cabernet spending extended time on skins for complexity. Components kept separate in French oak barrels, only 40% of them new, until being blended just before bottling after 15 months’ barrel maturation.

Fruit power is the first impression, dark berry fruits and some sage adding a background herbal lift. Oak spice is evident but all in balance with the fruit. The palate shows power and restraint at the same time, the iron fist in a velvet glove. Beautiful fruit, a bright acid drive and tannins that form a solid foundation for the long future. Brooding but not intimidating, this will be exciting to watch evolve.
