If you love the gravelly complexity of fine Bordeaux, then you’ll love the new release of Pintia 2012. Why? There is something beautifully aromatic about Pintia that alludes to the hallmark cassis/cedar/graphite/iodine notes one finds in the finest wines of the Medoc. Pintia has a large frame, but is perfectly tailored at 15% abv - like Martin Johnson in a tuxedo. In fact there has been a notable shift towards a more elegant style in Pintia over the past 3-4 releases, and it has become one of the best selling wines in our stores. Released at nearly 5 years of age it is ready to be enjoyed but has that very fine, gravelly tannin structure we find in good Bordeaux that suggests this will age beautifully over a further decade.
Pintia is a single estate based in Toro, in western Spain. It sits on the Duero river which flows across the border into Portugal (becoming the Douro). The Summers are hot and the Winters bitterly cold thanks to the high altitude (700m). Pintia is made from 100% Tinta de Toro, the local clone of Tempranillo (the most famous red grape variety in Spain). Made from low yielding vineyards, planted to the classic, low-density Spanish bush vine method (1000vines/ha). Aged in a combination of new French (75%) and American (25%) new oak. Aged for 3 years in bottle before release.
