Domaine Justin Girardin is very much a family affair, with a winemaking heritage that stretches back to the beginning of the 19th century. His father Jacques (brother of Vincent) handed over the running of the 17 hectare family domaine in Santenay to his son Justin in 2012. Whilst not being organically certified, Justin follows many organic principles as he is passionate about producing wines that express their terroir.
Justin sources this great value Bourgogne Rouge from a plot of 50 year old vines at the lower edge of the Santenay commune. All grapes are 100% hand-harvested and in the cellar Justin works as sensitively and respectfully as possible with natural yeasts and gentle extraction. The wine is matured for 12 months half in oak barrels, half in tank in order to promote the expressive fruit, and receives only a very light filtration at bottling. Lovely juicy ripeness of red and black cherry with a hint of cranberry. Fresh, relaxed and pure. His 2016 Bourgogne rouge is a super elegant Pinot Noir. Very perfumed with delicate red berry fruit flavours. This punches above its weight and it perfect for summer drinking and will hold its own well into the Autumn.
