Larry Turley and winemaker Tegan Passalaqua continue to produce a fantastic range of wines from some of California's oldest, head-pruned, dry-farmed Zinfandel vineyards. They have managed to persuade the owners of some of California's finest old vineyards to let them take total control of viticulture; farming organically (their own vineyards are also biodynamic), reducing yields to extremely low levels and picking very late. Yes they are high in alcohol, but they are also very pure, fine expressions of their individual terroirs and are beautifully balanced wines for drinking at any time.
The Estate Zinfandel comes from the vineyards directly surrounding the winery in St Helena at the warm, northern end of Napa, where the soils are eroded volcanic basalt with lots of obsidian inclusions that otherwise look like 'dragon glass '. Local Wappo Indians used to use the obsidian to carve arrowheads and other tools.
