The standout wine at this year's Terre Nere dinner with Marco di Grazia, the 2014 pre-phylloxera is the greatest wine ever made at the estate.
The prephylloxera is a patch of 2,500-3,000 vines within the Calderara Sottana that are planted on their own roots and are 120-140 years old. Each year a few more vines pass away so the production is limited and in slow decline. Don Peppino, who sadly passed away in 2014, tended this vineyard for more than 70 years so the wine is named in his honour. He recalls that the thick, wizened vines look today as they did when he first started pruning them as a boy. This is an incredibly rare wine and we're thrilled to have a small allocation this year.
The perfect growing season was defined by a cool summer and glorious autumn that allowed slow, but complete ripening of the grapes with an absence of heat spikes that keeps the wines fresh and aromatic. We've never tasted a Mt Etna wine like this, the flavours are deep and vibrant, full of liquorice, plums and exotic spices while the tannins are layered, lustrous and polished. The length of flavour goes on and on and on. A must-have wine in the cellar, and one that will stun for many years.
