Sashi Moorman is one of our favourite winemakers today in California – making wonderful pinot noir for Domaine de la Cote and Lompoc Wine Co, and beautiful syrah for Piedrassassi and Stolpman. This 2012 syrah from Ballard Canyon (Santa Barbara) shows the outstanding success of the vintage, which provided perfect conditions for producing fine, balanced syrah.
The predominant aromas reflect the colour - primarily black and purple fruits with lighter red on the periphery. Part of the lovely, dry chalkiness on the finish comes from 50% whole-cluster fermentation. Indeed, there is a beautiful ‘woody’ element that lingers behind the attractive perfume, integrated through fermenting on dry-farmed stems rather than ageing in new oak.
