A winery with a great story. Founded in the 1960s by a group of Stanford University PhD students in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Ridge has championed a uniquely American spirit. Guided by legendary winemaker Paul Draper, whose philosophy is; ‘find intense, flavourful grapes; intrude upon the process only when necessary; draw the fruit’s distinctive character and richness into the wine’. Ridge Winery has built up a cult-like following over the years with their Montebello estate wines and delicious field blends based around old vine Zinfandel. Wines of intense fruit purity, opulence, balance and all round enjoyability, we could not think of a better match for quality beef than the Lytton Springs.
Lytton Springs is in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of northern Sonoma County, and contains some 100 year old Zinfandel vines. Farming practices are holistic and sustainable - the winery is essentially a glorified cave made with bricks made from vineyard clay, straw and sand, and runs on electricity from photovoltaic cells on the roof.
This is a Zinfandel dominant (69%) field blend from Sonoma, the twist being the small amount of Petite Sirah (18%) that adds fabulous, rustic tannic depth making it our ideal US steak wine. A little Carignan (11%) and Mourvedre (2%) completes the blend.
The nose is opulent with rich black fruit, boysenberry, pepper, spice and vanilla, these flavours transcend onto the palate where the structure becomes evident and the wine builds to a complex layered finish. From the superb 2014 vintage showcasing the wonderful richness of the year, this can be enjoyed now (decanting essential) or lay it down in your cellar where it can improve over more than a decade. A true Californian icon.
