At the confluence of two valleys, the appellation of Pernand-Vergelesses, perched between 290 and 360 meters, is in the northern portion of the Côte de Beaune. The AOC Pernand-Vergelesses covers 123 hectares: 90 hectares of red of which 44 are Premier Cru and 53 of white of which 17 are Premier Cru. In this parcel of “Sous Frétille” with approximately seven ouvrées facing south-southwest, the vines' average age is 30 years and they are planted on a foundation of white marl. These soils give wines called “de Combe”, or “from the valley”, and are direct and cutting in their acidity. “Sous Frétille” has been classified as a Premier Cru since 2001 (but only for white wines.) The word “Frétille” is a derivation of “forestelle”, or forest in old French. Hence, “Sous Frétille” indicates the geographic location of the parcel, just under the forest. The early bud break and cool summer resulting in a relatively late harvest - compared to the recent past – allowed for a slow maturation of the berries and gave us an exceptional white vintage. Wines with tension, complexity and intensity of aromas are undoubtedly establishing 2014 amongst the very best Burgundian vintages.

A distinctly cool and restrained nose combines notes of white fruit, rose petal, lemon rind and wet stone. There is outstanding volume to the medium-bodied flavors compared to what is typical for the appellation with an abundance of the hallmark minerality that helps to add lift to the saline, citrus and enduring finale that should also be capable of aging well. This too is worth a look.
