Richard Kershaw is British-born and has been making wine in South Africa for more than 20 years for a range of different wineries. He became a Master of Wine in 2011 and launched his eponymous label in 2012, and has very quickly become known as the maker of some of the very finest Chardonnay and Syrah in all of South Africa. Richard is based in Elgin, South Africa's coolest region, situated about an hour to the southeast of Stellenbosch in a cool, coastal mountain range where apples are the best known (and currently most valuable) crop.
Despite a short track record, I am not alone in thinking that Richard's Chardonnays are amongst the top few in South Africa. Sourced from cool-climates they have not sacrificed the textbook texture of great chardonnay in pursuit of elegance and precision, instead walking a thrilling line between razor-light freshness and truly deep, complex brilliance. Pound-for-pound I think this is one of the best fighting Chardonnays on the planet.
