The Henschke family have been making wine at their estate in the Eden Valley since 1868. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke took over running the winery in 1979. Together with his viticulturist wife Prue, they have taken their two single vineyards, Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone, and transformed them into two of Australia’s most sought-after wines. Through a combination of great viticulture from Prue, who is at the forefront of re-introducing native plants into their vineyards to improve biodiversity, and winemaking from Stephen, they have built upon their inheritance and turned this traditional producer into one that is recognised by savvy wine drinkers throughout the world.

The Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated in the Eden Valley, was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, who founded South Australia! Unusual for its time, it was planted solely to Shiraz. The ancient 500 million year-old soils on the vineyard are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay resulting in low yields from the nearly 95-year-old dry-grown ungrafted vines. First bottled as a singlevineyard wine in 1952, it became recognised as one of Australia’s greatest shiraz wines.

The 2006 vintage shaped up as another high quality year but with only average yields in the Eden Valley and Adelaide Hillsand this is the first release of Mount Edelstone Magnums in the UK, shipped straight from Henschke's cellars in 2020. The wine was matured in 90% new, 10% seasoned French (67%) and American (33%) hogsheads for 21 months prior to blending and bottling.

'The 2006 Mount Edelstone Shiraz was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1912 with yields of less than 0.5 tons/acre. It was aged for 21 months in 65% new French and American oak. Purple-coloured, the nose sports aromas of wood smoke, Asian spices, incense, blueberry, blackberry, and chocolate. Dense and packed, this full-bodied Shiraz has lots of fresh, succulent blue and black fruit flavours, impeccable balance, and a long, pure finish.' 96pts, Jay Miller,

'Deep purple-crimson; the bouquet is intense and full of spicy black fruits accurately foretelling the power and purity of the palate; this is an outstanding Mount Edelstone, indeed, I cannot remember any better than this; it has the focus and structure to guarantee a 30-year future, if this is what you are after. Alas, it will long outlive me. How good will the ’06 Hill of Grace be? Shiraz. Screwcap.' 96pts, James Halliday,, Drink 2036
