Description

Gérard Bertrand, a former professional rugby player turned wine producer, first joined in a wine harvest and discovered his passion for wine in 1975, in the vineyards of the Villemajou Estate in Corbières. He went on to learn more about wine for 12 years alongside his father, Georges Bertrand.

Château L'Hospitalet is located in the appellation of La Clape which was only classified in 2015, and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea from an elevation of 130 meters. The vineyards are currently converting to biodynamics to ensure a pure expression of the Mediterranean coast's terroir. While many Languedoc wines are relatively inexpensive wines for “everyday” drinking, the Château l’Hospitalet La Clape is distinctive.

The 2016 is a big yet elegant wine with concentrated dark fruit — blackberry and cassis — and lots of herbal notes are on the nose and palate. There’s a fair amount of new oak, but well integrated, and a good measure of acidity keeps things on the fresh side.
