At Giaconda Rick Kinzbrunner has created arguably Australia's greatest Chardonnay, and is making a mean fist at its most sensual, aromatic Shiraz (Syrah) and is on the road to make top Nebbiolo. His focus and determination to benchmark himself against the very best wines of the world is compelling.
After 2012 and 2014, this takes our Estate Shiraz to a new level. As the vineyard matures this fruit is delivering greater depth and power. Irresistible already, this Estate Shiraz leaves no question unanswered as to its heritage. Briar, a touch of dill, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, wood spice and dry twigs are working their magic here. A most enticing structure; taut, fine tannins push ripe plum fruit, whilst bright acidity enlivens the fruit, adding freshness and vitality. The palate is silky and pure with fruit and oak tannins supporting but not stealing the show.
The Shiraz is made with a combination of whole bunch and de-stemmed, crushed fruit that is transferred to large concrete tanks for fermentation. These wines remain on skins for an extended period to develop softer, finer tannins and more complexity; before being basket pressed and transferred to French oak barrels (up to 40% new in some cases) for ageing.
