Gavin Chanin Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

Chanin Wine Co. is dedicated to crafting wines from Santa Barbara County that reflect the individual vineyard in which they are grown. Focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, two grapes that are especially revealing of subtle differences in geography, geology and climate. Grapes are grown in Santa Barbara County, where cool coastal winds, diverse marine based soils and a long growing season provide an exciting and unique environment for Burgundian varieties.
We started working with Bien Nacido in 2008 when we signed a long-term lease for both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Planted in 1973 on the most pronounced part of the Santa Maria bench, Bien Nacido can only be rivaled by Sanford & Benedict in terms of quality and history. The gravel soils and eroded limestone are some of the most unique and special soil we work with. These grapes were harvested on three separate days to achieve ideal ripeness. Each lot was pressed and directly put into French oak barrels (10% new) to ferment. The wine stayed there for 16 months on its lees and was then racked and lightly fined before being bottled unfiltered March 2019.

'There are only 35 barrels of the 2017 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard, which comes from the crème de la crème of vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley. Aged 15 months in 10% new French oak, it has a textbook bouquet of stone fruits, crushed rocks, toasted spice, and the salty, iodine, seaside-like marine influence that's so common from this region. Medium-bodied, balanced, tight, and juicy on the palate, it has beautiful purity of fruit and a great finish.'
