Brunello is the most richly textured expression of 100% Sangiovese, hailing from the southerly Tuscan region of Montalcino. Brunello di Montalcino is all about maturation and the wines are by law released not before the 5th year after harvest. Ageing is made in large, old oak vats (both or foudre) with some smaller 225L barriques, for 2 years, then the blend rests in glass-lined concrete vats for 6 months before being bottled. The combination of the unique Sangiovese clone, vine age, low yields and careful maturation produce a tight, compressed wine on the nose which develops aromatic complexity in the glass. Flavours build from start to finish with almost faultless balance and elegance, but the lingering sensation is savoury rather than sweet.
The Fossacolle estate is tiny at only 4 ha, but this in turn means the family can put their love into the few cases they produce and the quality speaks for itself, hand harvesting and rigorous single bunch selection means only the top fruit makes it into this Brunello. The wine shows rich black and red fruit aromas, with hints of spice and graphite-like minerality, lovingly trapped between vulpine jaws of tannin. A wine of contemplation.
