Dönnhoff Kreuz Kahlenberg Riesling Trocken 2016

Helmut Dönnhoff is regularly noted as one of the top few winemakers in Germany, he stands head and shoulders above his peers in the Nahe region of southwest of Germany. The Trocken style is fast becoming the choice for many consumers, despite the indisputable high quality of the traditional sweet wines of Germany, and here we find one that's drinking beautifully as a young wine.

This wine is an Erste Lage or the equivalent of a Premier Cru wine, and it is bone dry. The Kahlenberg vineyard is situated near the town of Bad Kreuznach on gravelly loam soil. There have been vineyards here for a very long time, with the earliest records indicating a presence in the 15th century.

The grapes here reach higher ripeness levels up to Spatlese territory. It is of course fermented to dry/trocken but the extra base ripeness gives texture and flavour intensity. It has an almost sweet aroma with ripe peach, enthusiastic citrus and an intense pithy finish. Dramatic!
