Ivan Sutherland's Dog Point vineyard in Marlborough has been the source of much of the grapes under contract to Cloudy Bay. By the time Ivan hit his 50s, he and winemaker James Healy decided it was time for a sea change and make wine from the family vineyard. They now make one of New Zealand's finest Sauvignon Blancs. Section 94 is a fuller bodied, textural style of Sauvignon Blanc. This single vineyard parcel is situated within the Dog Point Vineyard, using the same low cropping level from vines planted in 1992. Fruit is hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and fermented and aged in older French oak barrels for 18 months. Bottled without fining.
A wine that's consistently a match for all but the very best (and much more expensive) wines of Pessac-Léognan, this deftly oaked Marlborough Sauvignon ages brilliantly too. Leesy, rich yet beautifully balanced, it combines flavours of vanilla spice, gooseberry fool, lanolin and vivid acidity. One of the region's very best expressions of the grape.
