Ridge produced their first Chardonnay in 1962 from vines planted in the 1940s, but these days the 1970s plantings provide most of the fruit for what is one of their smallest production wines. All the grapes come from the Monte Bello Estate vineyards in the cool Santa Cruz mountains, but the wine has been absent from these shores in the last few years due to drought bringing much reduced yields. We're pleased to have it back again but we have just 12 bottles available.
Ridge Chardonnays are know for their luscious texture and generous oak flavours but even here we are seeing the amount of oak coming down, to just 10% new, and the wines are probably better for it. Honeysuckle, lime zest, toasted hazelnuts and ripe stone fruit are layered in profile on this wine and it's utterly, creamily delicious.
Farmed with organic methods and sustainable practices this as close to natural winemaking as you get without calling it a natural wine.
