Description

Frédéric Magnien still serves as winemaker at the family domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis, but he features here for his négociant business. Grapes are sourced from (and often harvested on behalf of) local Côte de Nuits colleagues, with a naturally strong focus on the Morey, Gevrey and Chambolle appellations that he knows best. By choosing to specialise in winemaking, rather than grape growing, he has been able to diversify his portfolio and foster meaningful, long-term relationships with contract grape suppliers.

Frédéric now works 50 hectares of vineyards, stretched across lots of different plots and ending up in 70 different vats in the cellar, from which he makes 65 cuvées. He attributes the extremely-fragmented nature of the Burgundian terroir to the fact that it was planted in tiny plots, with a vegetal material that is very different when young and brings different results that are difficult to blend, and it needs different vinifications. That's how he built his branded cuvées (Coeur de Roche, Coeur de Fer, Coeur d'Argile, Coeur de Pierre), based on the distinctive terroir which translates into totally different wines depending of the rocky-, ferrous-, clayish or stony terroir. .
