Bodegas Escudero is a 4th generation family estate covering 120 hectares on the slopes of Mount Yerga. At 450-800m above sea level, this is one of the highest sites in Rioja Baja. This altitude, in an otherwise hot and more Mediterranean influenced southeastern corner of Rioja, is critical for allowing Tempranillo, Mazuelo (Carignan) and Garnacha to ripen slowly, thereby avoiding the simple jammy and red fruit character of many Rioja Baja based wines.
The aroma spectrum is much darker with an obvious but well integrated oak background. This is a terrific little Crianza that punches well above its weight and is quickly becoming an everyday favourite at Philglas & Swiggot. Fantastic value at this price.
