Aurélien Verdet is an enthusiastic, driven young man whose father was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture back in the early 1970s, and Aurélien has carried on the tradition. Aurélien’s own Domaine comprises almost 4.5 hectares of Hautes Côtes de Nuits, and in 2009 he took over vines under a farming agreement in Vosne-Romanée village and 1er cru Beaux Monts as well as Nuits St Georges 1ers crus Damodes and Boudots. This entitled him to declare them as Domaine holdings and his total under vines in the Hautes Côtes has since been extended to almost 6 hectares. Aurélien’s purpose-built, modern cellar is located in the sleepy village of Arcenant in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits less than 10 kilometres west of Nuits St Georges.
He supplements his range through grape contracts which are tended organically but are not certified. Fruit is harvested manually and all the cuvées are vinified with indigenous yeasts and only minimal sulphur. Aurélien rarely exceeds 25% new oak for the wines’ barrel maturation. His wines marry floral elegance and finesse with finely-wrought tannins.
Aurélien’s eye-catching Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge ‘Le Prieuré’ proves that real quality can be achieved in these less well celebrated outposts of the Côte d’Or. With almost 6 hectares spread over 3 parcels this fine site lies on south facing slopes up behind the village of Arcenant, planted on clay/limestone soils with a rocky subsoil. The fine floral bouquet is beautifully precise and fresh whilst the palate is charmed by the teasing mineral seam and the beautifully wrought tannins. Drink from late 2018.
