Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs 2015

DR. LOOSEN ESTATE
The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that he had vines in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards. To maximize the potential of those vines, he dramatically crop size, uses only organic fertilization, insists on very strict fruit selection, and employs gentle cellar practices with a minimum of handling.

THE MOSEL REGION
Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley’s steep, southfacing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity.

ÜRZIGER WÜRZGARTEN RIESLING GG ALTE REBEN
Ürzig produces wines of a completely unique nature, showcasing the typically exotic fruit flavors of the “spice garden,” with a rich texture, gentle acidity and lingering finish. Grosses Gewächs (GG) means “great growth” and is the designation for an estate’s best dry wine from a Grosse Lage (grand cru) vineyard. This “great growth” Riesling is from a parcel of the estates oldest vines (“alte Reben”) and they are still planted on their original rootstock. The site lies directly behind the village and is still referred to by its historical name, Urglück (“original luck”).

Blazing red and insanely steep, the Ürziger Würzgarten (ERTS-ih-ger VERTS-gar-ten) vineyard, whilst directly adjacent to the vineyards of Erden, produces a completely different kind of wine, with exotic, spicy aromas and a mesmerizing earthiness. No other vineyard on the Mosel produces wines so bursting with tropical fruit flavors.

Ürziger Würzgarten is fermented with indigenous yeasts in traditional 1,000-liter Fuder casks; matured on the full lees for 12 months and with no bâtonnage.
