Clonakilla is without doubt the leading estate in Canberra and, in a rather short space of time, their Shiraz Viognier has come to be seen as the best example of this Côte Rôtie blend in Australia. No doubt the cool, dry climate with some elevation mirrors the windy extremes of the northern Rhône, while the small outcropping of granite upon which Clonakilla is perched also plays a vital role. The cooler climate gives gentle spices and berry flavours to the Canberra District Shiraz, softened by the addition of up to 6% Viognier which also adds an aromatic dimension to the blend. This is an Australian icon.
Tasted recently at an Australian tasting this stood out as one of the wines of the day. It is simply gorgeous this year, the cooler season has produced something aromatically stunning and sensuous. Hailed by Tim Kirk as one of the finest vintages ever of the great Shiraz-Viognier.
