Gabriëlskloof is a beautiful wine estate located near Bot River in the Overberg region east of Cape Town. It was purchased in 2001 by Bernhard Heyns, who had been on the lookout for the ideal place to plant vines. After planting, his first vintage was in 2009. Bernard’s son in law, Peter-Allen Finlayson took over the winemaking duties in 2015. And it is this takeover that really transformed the winery and took it to the next level. The estate is regarded by many as a centre of excellence in the country, with talented winemakers the likes of John Seccombe from Thorne and Daughters and Marelise Janse van Rensburg from Momento wines, renting winery space. This collaborative sharing of knowledge and passion may be one of the driving forces behind the rise of the estate to true stardom under the tutelage of Peter-Allen. There is really an excitement in the trade whenever Peter and his team is about to release new vintages, both locally and abroad.
Peter also has his own label, Crystallum wines, which he setup with his brother Andrew in 2007. Their father, Peter, was a pioneer in the production of cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at Bouchard Finlayson, so after university it seemed the natural thing for the boys to return home and source some fruit from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to start their own label. Today, Crystallum is one of the most highly regarded wineries in South Africa and is at the forefront of the ‘New Wave’ movement. Peter-Allan is always on the lookout for new vineyards and with each vintage he strives to make even better wines. The winemaking has evolved over the years and all of the wines are now wild fermented and the use of new oak has been reduced to help the bright fruit shine through.
It is not every day where you will find a winemaker who can shine on all fronts, who delivers quality wines across the board no matter what the varietal, site or cuvee. Peter-Allen really is a once in a generation winemaker and another all-round gentleman and nice guy. We are so excited to be able to offer you a 6 pack of this quality, wines that showcase not only the special places they come from, but most importantly tells you little story of the special that farm and produce them.
