Houghton Wines is one of Australia’s legendary producers, with a history dating all the way back to the 1830s. They produce a huge range of wines, many of which are great value. That includes today’s wine, the Houghton Margaret River Chardonnay 2017, which I’ll get to in a moment.
Houghton’s roots lie in Western Australia’s Swan Valley, though it now sources grapes from all over WA’s wine regions. The winery became famous across Australia for its “White Burgundy” (today known as White Classic), which has been a staple for many households going back to 1936. It was also home to legendary winemaker Jack Mann who oversaw an incredible 51 vintages at Houghton.
The Houghton Chardonnay grabbed the attention of our panel with its intensely aromatic lemon citrus, stone fruit and peach characters. Nuances of toasted cashew nut and subtle chary oak add complexity to the aroma. Flavoursome and mouth filling, the palate displays the same citrus and peach, with hints of vanilla, spice and subtle chariness from French oak maturation. It is well textured with great persistence of flavour.
