What is it?
Coravin is a device that allows you to serve fresh glasses of wine from the same bottle over weeks or even months.
How does it work?
Oxygen is the mortal enemy of an opened bottle of wine – we’ve all seen a half drunk bottle lose freshness and go flat, and inevitably we pour it down the sink. Coravin was invented by biomedical engineers from MIT – it blankets the wine with a cover of inert Argon gas, using the gas to push wine through a nozzle and into your glass. A syringe is inserted through the cork to deliver the gas, and with cork’s elastic properties it neatly reseals the bottle once the syringe is withdrawn.
Who might want one?
The ideal user of Coravin is a lover of good wine. Sometimes you want to enjoy a really great glass of wine but don’t want to drink the whole bottle. Coravin is perfect for those special wines that you can enjoy over 2 or 3 nights, rather than all at once. And while a bottle of wine is best shared, there are times in our lives when one half of a household doesn’t drink. It could be pregnancy, part of a diet, illness or just someone who wants to cut consumption or have a few nights off alcohol. It’s the smart and healthy way to enjoy great wine.
What does it cost?
There are several models of Coravin. At Philglas & Swiggot we carry the Coravin Model Two Black, an upgraded version of the original Coravin. It retails for £249. We also carry the Coravin Model Two Elite in Red, Silver and Gold. Made from superior materials and with greater aesthetic appeal, these retail for £279.
Your first Coravin comes with two Argon capsules – with enough gas in each canister to serviceably pour wine from 3-4 bottles (Tip – once you are ¾ of the way through a bottle, remove the cork as normal and drink the last glass by direct pouring. You’ll extend your gas by 1/3 this way). Coravin capsules can be repurchased for £15.95/twin pack.
