Domaine des Valanges was formed in 1980, by Jocelyne and Michel Paquet, in Davayé in the Mâconnais region of Burgundy. The domaine’s relative youth compared to many of the neighbouring vineyards, which can trace their origins back to the Middle Ages, has allowed the Paquets more leeway to experiment with their wines, without the burden of maintaining domaine traditions. Starting with 2.5ha, the Paquets gradually increased their holdings, and now they possess 11 hectares of vineyard land, 8 of which are in the Saint Véran appellation. The terroir of the region is particularly suited for growth of the Chardonnay grape, which is used in all Valanges wines.
Michel believes in a winemaking style that does not interfere too much with the natural process of the grape growth, and prefers to intervene as little as possible. The Mâcon wines produced at Valanges tend to be light, fresh affairs with fruity and floral notes, and are quite accessible. Their Saint-Véran wines tend to be more complex, with hints of honey and almond, and a subtle tinge of minerality. This wine is ripe, with full white-fruit flavors laced with youthful acidity.
