Lynch-Moussas is a historic estate purchased by the Lynch family and formerly located on three large plateaux: Madrac, Moussas, and Bages. In the 19th century, the estate was divided into two: Bages Jurine (today Lynch-Bages) and Lynch-Moussas (named after the plateau where many of the vines are grown).
Located to the west of Pauillac, this estate is in the 18th century, like Lynch Bages, owned by the famous family of Irish origin Lynch. Its wine is classified 5th Grand Cru in 1855. Acquired by Jean Castéja in 1919, then owner of Duhart-Milon, historical property of the family Castéja, the estate hardly passes the trials of the century. The year 1969 marks a decisive turning point with the purchase of the family shares by Emile Castéja.

This is the beginning of the rebirth with the renewal of the vineyard and the reconstruction of cellars and vats. It is now Philippe Casteja, son of Emile, who runs the property together with the trading house Borie-Manoux and several other castles in the hands of the family including neighbor Batailley.

The 57 hectare vineyard is planted on gravelly Garonne soils with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Merlot (30%) grape varieties. The average age of the vines is 30 years and the density of plantation close to 8,000 feet / ha. Disbudding, leaf stripping and green harvesting have been set up in recent years to bring high quality grapes to maturity.

The 2019 Lynch-Moussas is powerful, dense and super expressive. Iron, smoke, grilled herbs, tobacco and game give the 2019 a distinctly feral, earthy personality, but there is plenty of fruit to balance things out. Deep and virile to the core, Lynch-Moussas offers tons of power. It is also one of the most distinctive wines of the appellation. 92-94 Galloni
The 2019 Lynch-Moussas comes in a swanky bespoke embossed bottle to celebrate a century's ownership by the Castèja family (and very tasteful it is too.) Does it have a wine worthy of this anniversary, you ask. Well, it has a very attractive mint-tinged bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit laced with brown spices and cedar. It gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced entry: black pepper and a touch of Earl Grey infusing the black fruit. Well-balanced, fresh and showing similar class to its sibling Batailley. This is indeed a very fine Lynch-Moussas that frankly is a significant step up from some of the wines I was tasting a decade ago. Excellent. 92-94 Neal Martin
This vintage marks the 100th anniversary of Lynch Moussas under the Castéja family, who arrived at the property in 1919. They have worked hard to establish a more consistent performance over recent vintages, and certainly here you have plenty of impact, with silky tannins, deeply glossed blackberry and cassis fruits, touches of grilled cedar and strong coffee bean on the finish. Low temperature fermentation saw things kept at under 26°C at all times, helping to control the tannin extract from the fruit after the hot summer. An impressive performance from this estate."-Decanter Magazine, 92/100 Points
