Ghislaine Barthod's domaine originates in the 1920s with Marcel Noëllat whose daughter married Gaston Barthod, a soldier stationed in Dijon paying a visit to buy some wine, and fell in love with the girl who sold it to him. He gave up military life for a new life amongst the vineyards in 1960. His daughter, Ghislaine, and her partner Louis Boillot bought their current premises overlooking 1er cru Les Feusselottes in 1986. Though they share the team who work the vineyards for both of them, the vinification and commercial aspects of their businesses are kept completely separate. Ghislaine's father Gaston died in 1999, yet effectively Ghislaine had been making his wine for the last decade or so.

The domaine has an incomparable range of Chambolle- Musigny terroirs, with eleven separate Premier Cru bottlings as well as highly-regarded Bourgogne and Village wines.

Ghislaine and Louis’s son Clément is now working closely with his parents and taking a greater share of the winemaking duties each year. He guided our very own Master of Wine, Justin Knock, through the cellar tasting the 2019s. Picking began here on the 10th of September, with modest alcohol levels for the vintage, ranging between 13.5 and 13.8. What is really impressive here is the clear identity of each wine and the beautiful texture which comes from perfectly ripe tannins. The yields are very low in 2019, around 25-30 hl/ha – about 25% down on average. Despite the overall warmth and sunshine of the vintage, the wines have remarkable perfume and freshness thanks to a more tepid period around harvest.

Ghislaine’s Barthod’s wines are masterfully balanced, well-known for their finesse and tannin quality. Chambolle-Musigny is renowned for the aromatic lift it gives to Pinot Noir, perhaps more so than any other village in Burgundy. She fully destems her Pinot Noir and uses a short cold soak – these steps accentuate extraction of colour over tannin and perfume over richness. No more than 30% new oak is used on any of the wines and they receive a relatively long élevage in oak of 18 months.

'Beaux Bruns is a tiny plot of 0.6ha of Premier Cru vineyard. Barthod has a prime position on the rockier soils that have washed out of the Combe de Chambolle. Situated on the lower slopes directly below the Combe, Beaux Bruns is quite flat and tends to be the first of her plots harvested. Laden with summer berries, masses of fruit and more generous proportions this is a gorgeous wine upon release and ages remarkably well.' Justin Knock MW
