For many people Rioja is the quintessential Spanish wine. It comes from three vineyards spread along the River Ebro: the Rioja Alavesa, the Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja and traditionally all Riojas are blended from these three regions regardless of whether the Rioja producer owned land there. However Marquis de Murrietta took a Bordeaux chateau approach and used only fruit from its own vineyard surrounding the winery.
They also use a combination of French and American oak for maturation which gives their Reservas a firmer upright structure.
