Lytton Springs is in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of northern Sonoma County, and contains some 100 year old Zinfandel vines. Farming practices are holistic and sustainable, while the winery is essentially a glorified cave made with bricks made from vineyard clay, straw and sand, and runs on electricity from photovoltaic cells on the roof.
This is a Zinfandel dominant (74%) field blend from Sonoma, the twist being the small amount of Petite Sirah (15%) that adds fabulous tannic richness, making it our ideal US steak wine. A little Carignan (9%) and Mataro (2%) completes the blend. The high Petite Sirah content makes this more aromatic and tannic than Geyserville (which is often more flashy and seductive in its youth), and it was important here historically to bolster the Zinfandel which didn't develop so much colour here. Lytton Springs is set deeper into the valley than Geyserville so the climate is slightly more continental and hotter during the day by a few degrees. Oak used is American (as always with Ridge) and is sourced from high in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky and coopered into unique 200L barrels (rather than the conventional 225L).
The nose is opulent with rich black fruit, boysenberry, pepper, spice and vanilla, these flavours transcend onto the palate where the structure becomes evident and the wine builds to a complex layered finish. This can be enjoyed now (decanting essential) or lay it down in your cellar where it can improve over the next decade. A true Californian icon.
