Geyserville is a single vineyard in the Alexander Valley in the north-east of Sonoma County and one of California's most famous. A classic field blend (vines are seemingly randomly planted amongst each other) of Zinfandel (68%) and its complementary varieties Carignane (18%), Petite Sirah (12%), Alicante Bouschet (2%) and other mixed black grape varieties. These are the oldest vines farmed by Ridge, with a small patch of the Geyserville vineyard being planted in the 1880s, and the soils are mineral rich (especially in calcium) which seems to help with colour and acidity. Geyserville is slightly lower elevation than sister vineyard Lytton Springs (in Dry Creek Valley), so it sees fog earlier and later and is closer to the coast so its cooler than Lytton Springs. With age these wines mellow and become more Bordeaux-like but are full of appeal upon release.
The 2017s are juicy and vibrant and not as tannicly structured as the 2016s, and therefore are ready to drink now. There are masses of flavour in the blackberry, ginger peel, gravel, plums and liquorice. Thanks to the high proportion of Carignan the acidity is high and refreshing, the tannins elegant and gravelly. This is a succulent, seductive wine in contrast to the tighter structure of the Lytton Springs but both age admirably over ten years or more.
Farmed with organic methods and sustainable practices this as close to natural winemaking as you get without calling it a natural wine.
