Mac Forbes has chosen vineyards within the Yarra Valley to suit his style of winemaking. His thinking is that in a warm region, the finer wines will come from vineyards facing away from the sun.  Simple but a truly new approach. Combine this with a brave attitude to early picking, and understanding that acidity balances ripeness in the New World are some of the reasons his wines are so unlike his neighbours. Mac's wines have great structure and backbone, the fine acidity allows them to go with food and he is not afraid to make wines that will perhaps need a year in the bottle before they start to drink.Â
The wines are made in a very natural hands-on manner, traditional open-topped small batched containers, foot trodden, natural wild yeasts, the sort of techniques used in modern wineries including those in Burgundy and Bordeaux.
The 2017 vintage is a cooler and drier year in the Yarra and is considered the best vintage for Pinot Noir in at least a decade.
