Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne Romanee 1er Cru 'Les Beaux Monts' 2017 - 6 pack IN BOND

Beautifully nestled against the grand cru of Echezeaux, and Les Suchots, Grivot has two plots here– an elevated parcel that maintains freshness, and a section in the Les Beaux Monts Bas, giving the wine sensuality. The intensity and perfume on these wines is incredible. If possible, this is somehow plusher than Aux Boudots, a flowing mass of blue and back fruits. It’s magically ripe, rich and very long.

One of the superstar producers on the Cotes de Nuit, the Grivots have been making wine in Burgundy for nearly a century and built their reputation on their strong holdings of grand cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-St-Georges. They went through a period of hedonistic levels of new oak in the 80s and early 90s, but since then under 3rd generation custodian, Etienne Grivot, the wines have become more focused and pure. Now they are amongst the most admired and collectible in Burgundy.

Etienne declared himself very happy with the 2017 vintage, explaining that the season was pain-free, particularly in contrast to the challenging 2016 season. The vegetative cycle began early – amongst the 3 earliest in history, he claims – and at the end of April, frost threatened to destroy the crop before it had even formed. Thankfully disaster was avoided, the buds survived, and the spring and summer were warm and dry, with rain when needed. Etienne explained that careful and severe pruning, followed by a thorough green harvest was essential to avoid over-cropping. He also was one of the few who waited a little longer before picking, starting on the 12th September after a little rain had fallen. Having tasted the grapes earlier, he felt there was simply no flavour in them and the skins were chewy and unripe. Once some rain had fallen and unblocked photosynthesis, he argued, the gorgeous red fruit flavours we see in the final wines arrived and the tannins had softened.

About Domaine Jean Grivot

Domaine Jean Grivot

One of the superstar producers on the Cotes de Nuit, the Grivots have been making wine in Burgundy for nearly a century and built their reputation on their strong holdings of grand cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-St-Georges. They went through a period of hedonistic levels of new oak in the 80s and early 90s, but since then under 3rd generation custodian, Etienne Grivot, the wines have become more focused and pure. Now they are amongst the most admired and collectible in Burgundy. Etienne described 2016 as ‘a crazy vintage’, mainly due to the significant frost damage in the spring which caused them to lose all their crop of Chambolle, as well as significant volumes of Clos Vougeot, Suchots, Echezeaux, Pruliers and Ronciere, amongst others. In qualitative terms, however, he is very happy, describing it as a vintage of great transparency, with wines which are likely to show well throughout their lives, as opposed to the 2015s which are already closing down. It is a very successful year for Grivot, with wines of great red fruit purity, with classic Pinot Noir character and a vibrant freshness. Each terroir shows clearly in the wine, with very little vintage effect to dilute the origin of the wine. This is certainly a vintage that will please true Burgundy lovers. We have very limited stocks of these wines.
