The scenic village of Unterloiben sits at the foot of the steeply rising terraces situated at the eastern entrance to the Wachau. In the middle of the small village is the Knoll family winery which has been cultivating its vineyards for more than 200 years.
Emmerich Knoll is a quiet and discrete man whose wines reflect his reserved character. Giles MacDonough describes Emmerich as “scatty”, and it is true that he looks a bit like a distracted don, but he is a deeply serious and traditional winemaker with spotless cellars filled with oak vats and some small inox tanks.
Austere when the wines are young, they steadily develop their expression with years of bottle age. Knoll is a traditionalist. His wines age in classic large wooden barrels and are bottled late so that they may slowly and gently find their harmony.
Scented aromas with bright florals, but conveying a sense of precision. Clear acid structure forms the backbone of the wines. The fruit is finely-wrought with an elegant richness on the mid palate. Long and delicious.
